Testing our own motives

• I read this article (see original here) about Dorthy Day and responding to another article whether or not she would become a saint because of having had an abortion.  I have to admit that I was fascinated by the discussion and questions that arose in my heart.  While I'm not going to try to make an argument for her candidacy (that's above my pay grade) my first thought at the title was "has anyone ever heard of St. Augustine?"  I mean SERIOUSLY!?!?  But, my guess is that the author of original article who raises the question to begin with was not Catholic so he probably didn't know.  But, ultimately my heart broke a little.  Does the rest of the world think that we are so unforgiving that we cannot love someone who's sin was so public?  I am challenged to continue to love every single person who has ever had an abortion, is considering having one, or is or has been involved in helping people having them.  We have got to learn to speak the truth in love.  One without the other leads to an imbalance, truth without love can harden a heart, and love without truth can leave a person in their own pain.  At the heart of every person that disagrees with our faith is someone who is separated from God which means they are in pain.  What ultimately speaks to that pain is love.  Like Jesus with the rich young man we must "look at them and love them", even if they do walk away.
